Update on Buddy:)

Buddy is growing FAST!!! He is almost as tall as the girls (our 2 other goldens) and he has so much loose skin I know he will get bigger. We have always had female dogs so his size will be new for us. Buddy is running fast and seems to ignore his “little paw” the faster he goes. When he is walking and meandering he still puts weight on his “nub” It is amazing how used to his nub we are. It has one pad on it, no nails, and it is 1/3 the size of his other paw and about 2-3 inches shorter. The hair has rubbed off the tip of it and he is getting a small callus there. His whole front leg and shoulder seem so much smaller than the other front leg and shoulder, I do not know if this is atrophy or part of the deformity.
I have been reluctant to take him for walks because I do not want the concrete to irritate his nub, I guess he could walk on the grass but I know he is going to walk wherever the good smells are!!!!
He took his first trip to the beach last month,he loved running free on a little sand bar on Saint Simons Island. He and the girls ran around for about and hour, digging in the sand and swimming and chasing seagulls. He didn’t swim as much as I wanted him too, maybe next time. He got home from the beach and was covered in sand from head to tail! Good Times!
Last weekend he got fixed and microchipped, the surgery did not phase him at all, he was running that evening.
Thats about it, he is a typical pup, into everything he shouln’t be, unrolling the toilet paper, digging holes, stealing food off the counter……I love that boy. His favorite thing is to go “shopping” in my kid’s playroom. He loves to chew on webkinz. He also has developed an affinity to our pet ferret Sammy. They enjoy tussling together. I have to separate them so the ferret won’t hurt Buddy…..crazy! We are still considering a prosthetic, although less so since he is doing so well. If anyone has gone through getting a prosthetic please let me know about it or give me a link to your blog!
This is an older video of Buddy when he was younger he learned to lean on the wall to come down the stairs. Smart boy!!!buddy on stairs

Everybody meet Buddy, my adorable cousin!
Side by side, you guys couldn’t tell us apart! We are a mirror image of cuteness! (Don’t you say anything O.P. M. ! I am NOT an Afghan Hound! Those DNA results were rigged – I tell you!)
Buddy,
Mommy used to put a small bootie on my little gimpy leg when I was younger because it touched the ground a bit. (I got miniature toenails and all my pads, so I have to call it a leg.) But now it doesn’t touch the ground since I grew and it didn’t. Or sometimes she’d wrap the foot in a flexi tape (PINK, of course!).
Let me give you some tips on how to use your nubby stub for extra attention:
1. Kick your food bowl. It works everytime!
2. Kick your tennis ball with it! Pawrents will play everytime you do!
3. Kick your mom’s shin when you want her off the telephone! It always works!
When my granny is here, I kick her cane so she’ll beat my ugly monkeybutt brother with it. That’s the only thing that hasn’t worked. I know my granny is tempted but she hasn’t done it yet.
It would make a great video, I just know it!
Okay Buddy – I want to see more pictures! (I’m telling you – we are like bookends!)

Hey Buddy, I know you’re gonna catch up with me soon. I hope we get to meet!
Ok, you asked about prosthetics. Here are links to some discussions that have taken place:

My Mom thinks you should see a rehabilitation specialist before deciding. She’s betting that with some therapy you’ll learn how not to rely on it so much that it causes calluses and stuff. Prosthetics are such a gamble. We tend to hear about dogs who get them, but never about how they actually do with them long term. We bet that most do not end up adapting very well with them. They’re just so abnormal to us.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the great links, we still have time to think about a device. I work with special needs children and have lots of physical therapist friends. I know a device can be more trouble than it’s worth sometimes. Still tempting though….what if it helped? I don’t know the answers so we are playing it by ear. Thanks!!

Thanks Comet, do you have a link to your blog? I would love to see picts!!! I actually can knock on the door with my nub. My pawrents are too funny, they call me nubster, gimpy, and taught me to shake using my nub (If I used my good paw I’d fall down). We stay lighthearted about my little paw. It’s so funny when we go to petsmart or the beach I have so much leg left, people stop my pawrents and ask if the puppy is okay or if he hurt himself. When they tell them I was born without a paw people act so sad……I don’t really understand. We are not sad at all, I like being special. Any dog can do stuff on 4 legs, but I get it done on 3!!!! One time my daddy told somebody at the beach that a shark bit my paw off, he is so funny. Those people didn’t know what to think!
Thanks for the nubby stub ideas……I’ll give them a try!!!

You are welcome Cousin Bud Nub!
I got lots of stories just no dog blog! My job as a Tripawd keeps me pretty darned busy as my fellow Tripawders can attest to. I wear many hats around here! (We’ll fill you in later.)
My blabby mommy wrote all about me on the forums a while back! I’m so thankful she doesn’t snoop the blogs and interfer with my coolness here!
You can read about me and see some pics of me here: http://tripawds.com/forums/beyond-cancer/topic-on-twipawds-with-deformities-of-the-leg/
But keep in mind, I am WAY cooler than my mommy makes me out to be! She loves me lots and lots but she likes to baby me. UGH.

Howdy, from what we understand, this is quite simular to what was left of Shelby’s right front leg. Because she tried so hard to protect her leg it really changed how she walks on her remaining front leg and shoulder.
When she arrived at Homeward Bound from Taiwan, the doctors decided it was better to take the entire leg and shoulder off. She hasn’t looked back since.
Buddy - May 14, 2010 @ 10:17 am
Wow, Buddy does not seem to mind the leg, he actually puts weight on it if he is walking slowly or standing. It sounds like Shelby’s hurt her! If he acted like it hurt I would take the leg off in a second. I do worry about it eventually hurting him so I always watch him carefully. He seems to have a pretty big fat pad at the end of it, but I guess that could shift or change. We just play it by ear…….
